PRESS RELEASE: British Painter Speaks of Art as a Path to God
Feb. 19, 2010, Cleveland, Ohio – British painter David Clayton will give a lecture about art, beauty and the search for God during his visit to Cleveland on March 7 at 3:00 p.m. at the Lyceum School in Little Italy.
Clayton was a late starter as an artist – he studied material sciences at Oxford – and a late starter as a Catholic. He converted in his late 20s after turning to prayer and finding it answered. His career as a painter has flourished, with a portrait of Saint Luigi Scrosoppi in London's Brompton Oratory, a crucifix painting for the Benedictines at Pluscarden Abbey in Scotland and icon illustrations for the children’s book God’s Covenant with You by well-known American Catholic convert and author, Scott Hahn.
Clayton’s lecture is entitled “What is Pope Benedict’s Via Pulchritudinis? Liturgy, Beauty, the Universe and Everything.” In November 2009, Pope Benedict XVI delivered an address in the Sistine Chapel, speaking to artists in a talk entitled “You are the Custodians of Beauty.” The pope said, "One may speak of a ‘via pulchritudinis,’ a path of beauty which is at the same time an artistic and aesthetic journey, a journey of faith, of theological enquiry.”
Clayton was so inspired by the 1999 “Letter to Artists” by Pope John Paul II that he has been working to establish a new style of art school, inspired by Catholic and Orthodox traditions of sacred art. He is currently an artist and professor at Thomas More College of Liberal Arts in New Hampshire, is a four-year college in the Catholic intellectual tradition.
During his visit, Clayton will lead an art seminar with Lyceum students. The Lyceum was founded in 2003 to provide a classical Catholic curriculum for grades 7 through 12, with a focus on the Good Books, Fine Arts and the Socratic method of teaching. It is a coeducational college prep school with a unique program combining high academic standards with a serious emphasis on knowing, loving, and living the Catholic faith and culture.
The Lyceum is located in Little Italy at 2062 Murray Hill Road, Cleveland, 44106. For more information call 216-707-1121 or visit www.thelyceum.org
