Our Mission & Philosophy Part 3: Goodness,Truth and Beauty - Building a Culture of Life see also... The third and final part of The Lyceum Curriculum addresses specifically the character of the student. The terms "gentleman" and "lady" connote a refinement of character and manner which is not simply the product of having studied grammar, rhetoric, and logic, or even of being a Catholic. By study of the liberal arts and the Catholic faith, a student knows how, and even what, to think, but the lady or gentleman is the person who allows this knowledge to inform his will that he might then choose freely to live it ad alios, at the service of others. The lady or gentleman not only knows the truth and chooses the good, but also has formed his imagination and tempered his emotions so that he is free to delight in that which is truly beautiful. To this end, The Lyceum offers a fine arts program to habituate students to the experience of true beauty, and properly dispose them to respond to such beauty wherever it is found. Good music and good fiction help to order the emotions and refine the character, (as well as provide healthy relaxation.) An appreciation of the visual arts is also important, for the encounter with beauty refines the imagination. Training in vocal and instrumental music, drama and drawing complement the student's appreciation of good music, fiction, and visual art. When students encounter and respond appropriately to all that is most beautiful, good and true in the works of man, they became more receptive to the source of all beauty, goodness and truth, and in Him they find true rest, true leisure.
