Our Curriculum: Beauty and the Fine Arts

The Lyceum believes that the experience and appreciation of beauty is a distinctly human gift. Beauty has an effect on man that can transform the very core of his being. Consequently, all students participate each year in The Lyceum Schola Cantorum, the Music Theory Course, the Visual Arts Program, and the Drama Program. By studying the theory and techniques of the masters and imitating them in practice, students become disposed to appreciate and delight in that which is most noble, most beautiful.

Classical Catholic education seeks to dispose each person to be a fitting vessel for Divine Grace. Following the maxim that “grace builds on nature,” The Lyceum mission assumes that by acquiring the intellectual habits of truth, the mind of the student is more apt for Divine Truth. By acquiring habits of goodness, students are more disposed to living a life of the Theological Virtues. By acquiring virtues that allow us to see and respond to beauty, students are disposed to the appreciation of Him who is Beauty itself.
